Post-AHA 2007: The Pioneers: Jean Vague and Per Björntorp
By The International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk [9:19 min.] [18MB]
Dr. Jean-Pierre Després moderates a session with Dr. Ulf Smith and Dr. Irène Juhan-Vague about Jean Vague and Per Björntorp, the pioneering researchers on abdominal obesity and its related metabolic complications. In 1947, Jean Vague was the first to coin the terms “android” and “gynoid” obesity and to address the role body fat distribution plays in several health problems. Per Björntorp followed in Vague’s steps in the 1960s, using epidemiological data to highlight abdominal obesity’s relationship to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
