- Post-AHA 2007: Lifestyle intervention
- By The International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk [10:31 min.] [36MB]
- Dr. Jean-Pierre Després moderates a session with Dr. Timothy Church and Dr. Robert Ross on the importance of making physical activity a healthy lifestyle habit. Physical activity/exercise is an essential part of any program designed to improve one’s cardiometabolic risk profile and enhance glycemic control. Dr. Church believes that many of the problems associated with our modern lifestyle stem from the amount of time we spend sitting as well as a lack of physical activity. He also points out that most modern environments are not conducive to physical activity. Dr. Ross discusses the independent but combined effects of exercise and weight loss on reducing type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease risk, a win-win scenario. Both panel members agree that you can lose abdominal fat without losing weight. This is why it is important to measure waist circumference in order to evaluate the efficacy, benefits, and success of a lifestyle modification program incorporating physical activity/exercise.
