Description of this Publication

Harris WS, Mozaffarian D, Rimm E et al.

In view of controversy surrounding the recommended amount of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), this science advisory paper from the American Heart Association reviewed the evidence on the relationship between omega-6 PUFAs and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular disease. In summary, the American Heart Association supports the consumption of at least 5-10% of energy as omega-6 PUFAs against a backdrop of other lifestyle and dietary recommendations. A reduction in omega-6 PUFA intake from their current levels would be more likely to increase than to reduce the risk of CHD.
