European Media Prize

1. The Prize

The International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk European Media Prize will reward articles that best inform readers about a growing public health issue: abdominal obesity and related cardiometabolic risk.

  • With a growing number of individuals worldwide sharing an affluent, sedentary lifestyle, the World Health Organization (WHO) projects that by 2015, more than 2.3 billion people will be overweight and 700 million will be obese.

  • Existing patient management strategies have not prevented the sharp rise in abdominal obesity and type 2 diabetes, two new emerging drivers of global cardiometabolic risk.

  • Not all forms of obesity place patients at equal risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. As the most dangerous form of obesity, abdominal obesity greatly increases the risk of developing these diseases.

  • More can be done relatively easy and right now to better inform physicians and the general public about cardiometabolic risk, its ties to abdominal obesity, and how to assess and prevent this risk.

The prize is co-sponsored by the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk and the European Association of Journalists.

2. Objectives of the Prize

The prize aims to reward journalists who help fight the growing pandemic of abdominal obesity and related cardiometabolic risk worldwide by providing their readers with comprehensive, in-depth information on cardiometabolic risk factors and disease prevention measures.

Studies have shown that patients are more likely to adopt healthier lifestyles when both they and physicians have a greater understanding of abdominal obesity and cardiometabolic risk.

Abdominal obesity is initially asymptomatic, and related cardiometabolic risk can increase unnoticed until type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease is diagnosed. It is therefore crucial to raise awareness regarding prevention and diagnosis of abdominal obesity and related cardiometabolic risk.
