With his longstanding expertise in the pharmaceutical industry, where he served as international conference coordinator and director of international communication (including international press relations) for a variety of firms, Jean-Claude Coubard brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in medical-scientific communication, international education of health professionals, and international press initiatives for both the medical community and general public.

Mr. Coubard’s professional focus has always centred on the field of metabolism, atherogenic dyslipidemias and their cardiovascular consequences in particular. Faced with the ever-worsening obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic and its impact on cardiovascular diseases, Jean-Claude Coubard drew on his knowledge of the field and his relations with professional bodies and associations worldwide to identify the need for a transversal structure, a multidisciplinary international platform to help foster dialogue between experts in different but complementary fields who are not used to sharing their expertise. This platform includes experts in obesity and metabolism, basic researchers, and cardiologists. Its ultimate goal is to stem and better manage these pathologies for the benefit of health professionals and patients worldwide.

After speaking with Dr. Jean-Pierre Després—a world-renowned expert in abdominal obesity and its cardiovascular consequences and Director of Research in Cardiology at Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec—the decision was made to create the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk.

This decision was backed by Université Laval in Quebec City—where Dr. Després is a professor—with the university agreeing to host the seat of the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk. Jean-Claude Coubard now puts his expertise to use for this new international Chair as Executive Director.
