It has been suggested that individuals with even 1 or 2 metabolic syndrome risk factors are at increased risk of mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD) and CVD. However, a large prospective study from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II) (20) lent further support to the notion that the metabolic syndrome more strongly predicted CHD, CVD, and total mortality than its individual components alone (Figure 2), confirming previous findings (21).
