This classification is based on the average of 2 or more readings taken at each of 2 or more visits after initial screening (2). The “prehypertension” stage is a new category. These patients are at risk of hypertension and making lifestyle changes is key for them to prevent an eventual progression from the “prehypertension” stage to hypertension itself (2).
Hypertension may be essential or secondary. Secondary hypertension has an identifiable cause and accounts for less than 5% of cases. Essential hypertension is a diagnosis made in the absence of an identifiable secondary cause. Essential hypertension accounts for approximately 95% of hypertension cases (6).
According to the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee of Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7) (2), BP classification for adults (≥ 18 years old) is indicated in the Table.
